Boxing Day 2012 retained

Mar 7 2012

The SDA, FSU and other partners in the Take The Time coalition welcome the NSW Government’s decision to withdraw the Retail Trading Hours Amendment Bill from Parliament.

This means that there will be no change to existing public holiday and bank trading laws this year.

The decision was announced yesterday a few hours after Fred Nile MLC pledged, at a Take The Time forum that he and his Christian Democrats Party would not support the Government’s proposal to take Boxing Day off retail workers. This position, combined with the ALP’s earlier commitment to oppose the removal of retail and bank trading protections, meant that the proposed laws could not get the necessary votes in Parliament.

The withdrawal of these proposed laws means that Boxing Day 2012 remains protected in non-tourist areas, ensuring that retail workers, warehouse workers and NSW families generally retain their Christmas break.

The Take The Time coalition partners remain resolutely opposed to any further erosion of work/life/family balance for the NSW community.

Stand up for retail workers and any further erosion of their precious family time.
